Biography

Known for her versatility and imagination, violist Erina Goldwasser performs with the world's leading orchestras and as a chamber musician across five continents.

Erina Goldwasser enjoys a dynamic chamber music and orchestral career across the US, Europe, Asia and Australia.

After completing degrees in violin and viola, she moved to Cologne, Germany to study and play chamber music. Upon returning to the US, she joined the Detroit Symphony followed by the Pittsburgh Symphony, where she served as both acting Assistant and Associate Principal Viola. She appears in numerous recordings with the Pittsburgh Symphony, including the 2018 recording which received a Grammy Award. Invited by Zubin Mehta to join the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, she has also been a guest musician with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Boston Symphony, San Francisco Symphony and served as Guest Principal Viola with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

An active chamber musician and recitalist, she appears regularly throughout the US, Europe, South America, Canada, Australia, China and Japan and on numerous broadcasts and recordings. She has toured with the Amernet String Quartet and has appeared for the past six summers at the Strings Music Festival in Steamboat, Colorado. Her musical collaborations include Noah Bendix-Balgley, Mark O'Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, David McCarroll, Lorna McGhee, Yefim Bronfman, James Ehnes, and Denis Kozhukhin.

Originally from Rochester, New York, she studied with Zvi Zeitlin, Victor Danchenko, Donald Weilerstein and Robert Vernon. She completed additional study with Harvey Shapiro, Nobuko Imai, Yuri Bashmet, Paul Neubauer, and the Guarneri, Emerson, Cleveland, Cavani and Juilliard String Quartets. She attended the Music Academy of the West, Taos School of Music, and two summers at the Verbier Academy in Verbier, Switzerland. She has appeared as a soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic, Cleveland Institute of Music orchestra, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Erina plays a viola attributed to Domenico Busan from Venice made in 1750. She resides with her husband and children in San Francisco.
